Abstract

Organic waste is the type of waste most commonly produced by the community. Until now, waste management in various regions has not been optimal. According to data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) in 2022, input from 202 regencies/cities across Indonesia reported that the total national waste accumulation reached 21.1 million tons. Of the total national waste production, 65.71% (13.9 million tons) can be managed properly, while the remaining 34.29% (7.2 million tons) have not been managed effectively. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of activated charcoal made from organic wood materials and to evaluate its adsorption capacity in water. This research used an experimental method. The research parameters included water content, ash content, iodine adsorption, volatile matter content, fixed carbon content, and water clarification. The results showed that the water content was 5.80%, ash content 13.48%, iodine adsorption 26,395.20 mg/g, volatile matter 13.60%, fixed carbon 72.97%, and water clarity 24.13 NTU. The conclusion of this study is that the characteristics of the activated charcoal generally meet the standards, except for the ash content.
