An Analysis of the Determinants of Online Shopping Expenditure Levels Among FMIPA Students at the University of Mataram Using the Tobit Regression Model

Student consumption activities, aside from meeting academic needs, are also carried out to support personal appearance by purchasing goods online. In online shopping, the amount of expenditure may be influenced by various factors. The purpose of this study is to identify the appropriate model and determine the factors that affect the magnitude of online shopping expenditures among students using Tobit regression, in which the dependent variable contains incomplete or censored observations. The data used consist of online shopping expenditures of FMIPA students at the University of Mataram, involving eight independent variables. Based on the results, seven independent variables were found to have a positive effect, while one variable had a negative effect on students’ online shopping expenditures. However, the resulting model produced a very small R² value of 0.113. This indicates that only 11.3% of the variation in online shopping expenditures can be explained by the eight independent variables used in the study, while the remaining 88.7% is influenced by other factors outside the model. This condition is also reflected in the limited number of variables that are individually significant.
