Abstract

Housing development around rice fields causes residential wastewater to flow into irrigation channels, polluting the water and disrupting rice growth. One solution to the aforementioned problem is to utilize a simple biofilter. This research aims to determine the quality of irrigation water and the effectiveness of layered biofilter devices in improving water quality in the form of physical and chemical properties of irrigation water in rice fields near residential areas in Perampuan Village, Labuapi District. The method used in this research is a quantitative and experimental descriptive method with data analysis in the laboratory. The research was carried out by taking samples at one point twice, namely before and after applying the tool. Before application of the tool, the BOD parameter value was 10.73 mg/l (quality standard 3-6 mg/l), the COD value was 300 mg/l (quality standard 25-100 mg/l), the pH value was 10 (quality standard 6- 9), the turbidity value is 14.9 NTU (quality standard 1-5 NTU), the temperature value is 29 (quality standard 22-28), the TDS value is 2350 mg/l (quality standard 1000-2000 mg/l). Before the application of the tool, the parameter values did not meet the quality standards for irrigation water, and they were polluted. After application of the tool, the BOD parameter decreased from 10.73 mg/l to 1.82 mg/l, a reduction percentage of 83%. The COD parameter decreased from 300 mg/l to 39 mg/l, a reduction percentage of 87%. The pH parameter decreased from 10 to 7.3 with a reduction percentage of 27%. The turbidity parameter decreased from 6 NTU to 2.63 NTU, a reduction percentage of 56%. The TDS parameter decreased from 2350 mg/l to 1400 mg/l, a reduction percentage of 40.42%. The decrease in the concentration of chemical-physical parameters after the application of the tool shows that the tool is efficaious in improving irrigation water quality.
