Abstract

Organic waste generation from households, agricultural activities, and homestays remains an environmental concern in Kembang Kuning Village, East Lombok Regency. Improper disposal of organic waste may cause unpleasant odours, environmental pollution, and reduced environmental quality in a tourism-based village. This community service program aimed to implement biopore infiltration holes as a community-based strategy for soil conservation and organic waste management. The program involved environmental observation, site identification, participatory planning with local youth groups, preparation of tools and materials, construction of biopore infiltration holes, and direct environmental education for residents and homestay owners. Biopore holes with a diameter of approximately 4 inches and a depth of 80 to 100 cm were installed across five hamlets. A total of 74 biopore infiltration holes were constructed at 17 locations, including households and homestays. The activity introduced residents to the functions of biopore holes in improving rainwater infiltration, reducing the risk of surface water accumulation, maintaining soil organic matter, and converting household organic waste into compost through natural decomposition. Direct demonstrations and educational brochures supported community understanding of proper organic waste management. The program shows that biopore infiltration holes offer a simple, low-cost, and practical environmental intervention for village tourism areas. Continued maintenance, household waste segregation, and support from village stakeholders are necessary to sustain the program and strengthen its environmental benefits.
