Abstract

This community service program aimed to enhance reading interest and literacy skills among elementary school children in Dusun Puyahan, Lembar Selatan Village, West Lombok Regency. The activities were implemented through a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach involving teachers, village officials, and parents as active partners. Four main activities—Read-Aloud Sessions, Smart Book Review, Story Writing Based on Reading Materials, and Village-Level Literacy Appreciation—were designed to gradually develop literacy from receptive to productive skills while strengthening a communal reading culture. The results indicate increased enthusiasm and participation among children in reading and writing activities, along with the emergence of collective community awareness of the importance of literacy. This program demonstrates that a context-based participatory approach can effectively foster a reading culture in rural areas, although sustainability requires improved facilities, greater parental involvement, and supportive village policies.
