The Bajau community is widely recognized as a maritime society with a profound and enduring relationship with marine ecosystems. This interconnectedness is reflected in various forms of local wisdom that function to maintain ecological balance and ensure the sustainability of the marine environment. This article aims to examine the local wisdom of the Bajau people in Poto Tano Village in the preservation of marine ecosystems through a philosophical lens, particularly within the framework of environmental ethics.
This study employs a library-based research approach, complemented by field observations conducted through discussions with members of the Bajau community. Data analysis is carried out using a descriptive-analytical method to interpret the philosophical values embedded in local wisdom practices.
The findings indicate that the local wisdom of the Bajau community is manifested through rituals such as Ngingidah, Tiba Pisah, and Nyoroh, which serve as expressions of gratitude, reverence, and moral commitment toward the sea as a vital source of life. From the perspective of environmental ethics, these practices reflect an ecocentric worldview, positioning humans as an integral part of the ecosystem with an ethical responsibility to preserve marine sustainability.
This study affirms that the local wisdom of the Bajau community holds significant philosophical relevance and can serve as a conceptual foundation for sustainable marine ecosystem management.
