Air Pollution, Pollutant, Skin HealthAbstract
The ever-increasing levels of air pollution around the world are causing great concern regarding health issues. Repeated and frequent exposure to high levels of pollutants may have adverse effects on the skin. The study aimed to determine the negative impact of air pollution on skin health. This research is a literature review that searches, collects, and synthesizes the current findings of specific topics. Therefore, in this review, the researcher analyzes skin health problems due to air pollution. Changes in microflora, oxidative stress, and activation of the Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AHR) lead to the induction of an inflammatory cascade in the skin. Several types of air pollutants have been identified that can cause damage to the skin, including pollutant gases (carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulfur dioxide), heavy metals (lead, nickel, particulate matter), and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). Exposure to each type of pollutant has its mechanism and impact on the skin. In general, air pollutants can be associated with aging, inflammation, or allergic skin conditions.Downloads
