Fungsi sistem imun secara fisiologik adalah pertahanan terhadap mikroba infeksi; bahkan zat asing yang tidak menular dan produk sel yang rusak yang dapat menimbulkan tanggapan kekebalan. Respon dari berolahraga, baik akut maupun kronik akan memberikan efek terhadap komponen-komponen dalam sistem imun. Respon imun yang terjadi tergantung pada intensitas dan durasi berolahraga. Olahraga dengan intensitas sedang akan menstimulasi berbagai parameter yang berhubungan dengan imunitas seluler sehingga dapat menurunkan risiko infeksi, sedangkan olahraga dengan intensitas tinggi akan mengakibatkan pengurangan parameter yang sama, yang akan meningkatkan risiko penyakit infeksi.
