Brain Injury and Neurocognitive Problem in Cerebral Malaria

Malaria serebral (CM), hasil dari infeksi Plasmodium falciparum , dan memiliki angka kematian yang tinggi. Penyintas CM dapat mempertahankan gejala sisa pasca CM seumur hidup, termasuk kejang dan defisit neurokognitif yang sangat mempengaruhi kualitas hidup mereka. Karena parasit Plasmodium tidak masuk ke otak, tetapi berada di dalam eritrosit dan terbatas pada lumen pembuluh darah otak, neuropatogenesis yang menyebabkan gejala sisa neurologis ini tidak jelas dan kurang diteliti lebih lanjut. Menariknya, patologi CM postmortem berbeda di daerah otak, seperti munculnya punctae hemoragik dalam warna putih versusmateri abu-abu. Berbagai faktor inang dan parasit berkontribusi pada risiko CM, termasuk paparan pada usia muda, genetika terkait parasit dan inang, penyerapan parasit dan tingkat respons inflamasi inang.Sejauh ini, beberapa perawatan tambahan yang diusulkan belum berhasil dalam pengobatan CM. Perhatian lebih pada hal ini dapat mengarah pada pengembangan pengobatan tambahan yang efektif untuk mengatasi gejala sisa neurologis CM.Downloads
