Abstract

Iodine is an essential micronutrient that plays a role in the synthesis of thyroid hormones, which are involved in metabolism, growth, and nervous system development. Knowledge about iodine may influence food choices and, consequently, affect an individual's iodine intake. This study aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge about iodine and iodine intake among students of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Mataram (FKIK Unram). This was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. The study subjects consisted of 51 students of FKIK Unram. Data on iodine knowledge were obtained using a questionnaire, while data on iodine intake were obtained through three non-consecutive 24-hour food recalls and subsequently analyzed using the NutriSurvey application. The relationships between variables were analyzed using the chi-square and Spearman tests. The majority of respondents had a good level of knowledge about iodine (68.63%), while most respondents had inadequate iodine intake (60.8%). The chi-square test showed a significant association between the level of iodine knowledge and iodine intake (p=0.00). This study showed that good knowledge about iodine was associated with a greater tendency to achieve adequate iodine intake among university students.
