Abstract
Guillain–Barré Syndrome (GBS) is an acute immune-mediated peripheral neuropathy characterized by progressive muscle weakness that can rapidly lead to respiratory failure. Despite its relatively low global incidence, GBS poses a considerable clinical and economic burden, particularly in developing countries where healthcare systems are still evolving. One of the key challenges in community-level management is limited public health literacy, which often results in delayed recognition of early symptoms and late referral for medical care. This community-based program was conducted at Universitas Mataram Hospital (RSUM) with the aim of enhancing knowledge among patients and their families through a structured educational intervention. A quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach was applied, involving 21 participants consisting of patients and their caregivers in the neurology unit. The intervention included baseline assessment, interactive educational sessions using visual aids, guided discussions, and post-intervention evaluation. Knowledge was assessed across domains including symptoms, risk factors, transmissibility, and warning signs (red flags). The findings showed a statistically significant improvement in knowledge, with mean scores increasing from 81.9 at baseline to 98.0 after the intervention. These results suggest that structured, hospital-based educational programs are effective in reducing knowledge gaps related to complex neurological disorders. In conclusion, family-centered health education plays a pivotal role in facilitating early detection, improving adherence to rehabilitation, and optimizing long-term outcomes in patients with GBS in Indonesia.
